The Shatzell Ave Shuffle with DJ Jack Straw
Like hearing an eclectic blend of roots-based music, ranging from blues & rhythm n' blues, gospel, and soul to bluegrass, alternative country, and folk rock from singer-songwriters? If so, The Shatzell Ave Shuffle (named after the location of our station's studio in The Epicurean shop in Rhinecliff NY), is a show for you! Our program's mission centers on two main areas: 1) exposing listeners to new offerings in the vein of so-called "Americana" music, which is comprised mostly of the genres mentioned above; and 2) educating audiences on music history, with a focus on artists who developed these genres. usually presented in the form of theme sets. So, on the theme of "death," we'd play material like Ralph Stanley's "O Death," Reverend Gary Davis' "Death Don't Have No Mercy," gospel great Marion Williams' "I'll Fly Away," Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention's "A Sailor's Life, Jona Baez covering Woody Guthrie's "Deportee," and John's Prine's "Please Don't Bury Me."
Brad Clough, whose alter-ego on the air is DJ Jack Straw, is pleased to join the Radio Free Rhinecliff family after 5 years' previous experience in free-form community radio. Besides being a music junkie who loves sharing his varied tastes with others, he has pursued a long career teaching and researching Asian philosophies and religions, with stints at Bard College, The American University in Cairo, and The University of Montana. After returning to the mid-Hudson Valley in 2019, he has served on the faculty of Bard's renowned Prison Initiative, offering courses in his specialty as well as writing-intensive classes in the general humanities.

Please join us on this week's excursions, won't you?

Episode 4 - Bob Dylan remembered Jerry Garcia this way: "There's no way to measure his greatness... There are a lot of spaces between the Carter family, Buddy Holly, and say, Ornette Coleman--a lot of universes--but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, hypnotic, and subtle."
Every first week of August--marked by his birth date on August 1st and death date on August 9--is occasion for fans to specially celebrate the music of Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead. On our new episode of the Shatzell Avenue Shuffle (#4), we will do the same, but with the usual variety of sounds you've come to expect from our program. Not only will we highlight some selections from Jerry's career as a solo artist and band member, but we'll also feature several covers by the likes of The Decemberists, Counting Crows, Willie Nelson, Bruce Hornsby with DeYarmond Edison, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, and Laura Veirs. Please join us, won't you?
